Just like many people, I grew up surrounded by many animals. I had the opportunity to live with horses, cows, chickens, dogs, cats, and so much more. However, their cute faces weren’t the only thing that drove me towards veterinary medicine. Growing up my mom had cancer. Since I was the youngest kid, I would spend a lot of time at home with the animals. They really kept me company during such a confusing time in my life. Going into veterinary medicine was my way of giving back to them and all that they did for me as a kid.

Being a first-generation Latina, I have seen how pet owners light up when I step into the room and speak a familiar language to them. It’s my goal to make sure people feel heard, welcomed, and educated when it comes to their pets.

Personally, I feel like adoption and rescuing are great! I have 5 rescues myself that make my heart whole. There is a misconception that you can’t find “pure breed” animals in shelters or rescues. However, there are rescues dedicated to specific breeds. Shelters are receiving animals every single day, and not every animal that goes in is a mix. I worked in the shelter and can confirm that there were many pure-bred dogs that went through the shelter doors.

Personally, I do have 3 dogs, 2 cats, and 4 frogs. I tend to adopt dogs and cats that are primarily black. Statistically they have a harder time being adopted, and that was the case for all of mine.
